In Chinese, "Gua" means "to scrape" and "Sha" translates to "illness" or "fever." Historically, this technique involved vigorous facial and body massage to eliminate negative energy, as well as physical and mental ailments such as muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, and stress.

The term "Gua Sha" encompasses both the practice of energy massage and the traditionally associated tool, usually made of jade, quartz, or buffalo horn.
